Daniel McCullar replied to Deke Rivers's discussion should Hapkido be considered a mixed artial art or an art unto its own?
"Many, many years ago there was an article entitled, "Hapkido, the original Mixed Martial Art." I have it in with papers that are in storage. I'll have to try and find it one day as I had accumulated an ungodly amount of articles, and…"

Primary martial arts style:
Jung Bai Hap Ki Do
How many years practiced?
since 1980
Other arts you've trained in:
Base art is Hapkido, also trained in 2 other styles of Hapkido, American style boxing, American style wrestling, Kajukenbo, Judo, Bjj, different styles of Gung Fu, Okinowan Shorin Ryu, TKD, Wing Chun, Muai Thai, military combatives from back in my service days.... I do believe that is about it..
What do you love about your art?
I am a traditionalist, I love the fact that I can maintain a traditional attitude and mindset and still have an art that is progressive and eclectic in technique and application. I also love how everything else (99% at least) works so well with my chosen base art.
Where do you study or practice?
Our Headquarters is located in Korea, but for the time being there is a beautiful park that is local where I train and teach.

It is the principle that is to be mastered, not just the mere mechanical motions, before one can develop an effective system of self-defense.

I am Irish/Native American(Chocktaw, Blackfoot & Tsalagi) with a pinch of Austrian thrown in there over 100 years or so ago. I spent 10 years in the military and 3 in law enforcement(1 special police, 2 fugitive recovery). I am now in Cali making a go of it as an actor, stunts (primarily martial arts/fight stunts & choreograghy(stage combat). Things are going pretty good. I have met a lot of people: actors, models, producers, stunt people & 10 times that in FLAKES. Even so it is slow going, but positive energy flows. My over all goals are simple. I want to be able to afford my own studio without worrying about cost, and to be able to share with the world my passion that is Hap Ki Do, the beauty of the Korean people and their culture. There is so much out there about every other Asian culture, but so little that honestly represents the Korean culture.

bjj and add ons

I have noticed in my area that bjj schools are adding more arts to their curriculum. Used to be the other way around.

No one seems to care anymore. I personally do not believe anything major and destructive will happen. But, if my life has taught me one thing is that one should never discount anything, no matter how absurd it May seem.

I do have a basic plan in case of emergencies. Since I have not had the money to stock up on supplies I have prepared in different ways.

I am a warrior, this is how I will survive. I will make my first stop in northern Cali. There is someone there who's… Continue

martial artists beware. you May be setting yourself up to die!

I love this kinda crap. It is so amusing to run into. One of these days I am gonna start a web site that reviews all of this kinda stuff and put traditional martial art technique references next to their super secret stuff.

These kinda adds prey on the insecure, lazy and desperate.

The thing is Wael, I have been in love with her for a while now. We actually had a little crush on each other years ago, but lost contact. We reconected in a rather interesting way and all those old feelings came rushing back. I realized that i was in love with her. But she now has a boyfriend and lives 6 hours north.

She is my ideal woman. A martial artist, outdoorswoman, used to lift weights. Amongst that we have many things in common, but I'm not sure how we would ever get together.

Working security at the Playboy mansion tonight. Should be interesting. I May miss The South, but one thing I can say is that things are never boring here.

I appreciate the feedback on both the style of GM Lee and your familiarity with Master DaRoja. He seems to be a really good instructor and I had little doubts about the style and lineage. It is hard to google and find out information about GM Lee and his schools and Master Daroja is very busy when I see him at class. I have yet to be able to ask alot of questions to him so again I appreciate the feedback. Another thing being military and moving alot I am concerned about finding another place to train once I leave Virginia. I have a couple of years to deal with that so I will just take advantage of the training I am getting while I am here.

thanks again
